In the top field beside the tall grass

Long ago when we were Nippers

Hidden by the green grass bushes

Hidden so no one else could see

Beneath the trees we built a cabin

Built of logs and broken branches

Logs and twig leaf built by nippers

In the top field beside the tall grass

Long ago

When we were Nippers

In the top field beside the tall grass

We dug the earth with spade and spit

Beneath the ground we dug a tunnel

Long ago when we were Nippers

Tunnelled beneath the scented Bay

Beside the Spruce and Mountain Ash

Beneath the rambling rose and Laurel

Beneath the clay and coiling root

Long ago

When we were Nippers

High in a Sycamore we built a tree camp

With climbing holds to find our way

With an upturned table for a floor

We built a tree camp hidden by twig leaf

Hidden so no one else could see

Long ago when we were nippers

Within all was warm and bright with candle

Hidden from the world above the tall grass

Hidden so no one else could see

Long ago

When we were Nippers
