East Cowes, Isle of Wight 1957

From the fat black oven

At number 9 Adelaide Grove

Hilda prepares Sunday lunch

Sidney expects his lunch to be on the table

Hilda, on the other hand

Sings along to ‘Family Favourites’ on the radio

As she serves him steaming vegetables

Sidney slices the roast beef

Sitting at the table he will eat noisily

 In silence

She wears red feathers...

He smiles through the gravy

…and a Hula Hula skirt’
